THREE IMPORTERS FROM SOUTH KOREA WERE FOUNF ILLEGALLY TRANSORTED INTO THE NORTH KOREAN COAL
On the 10th, the South Korea Customs released the results of the investigation into the “shipment of the coal from North Korean”. It is reported that the three South Korean importers provided a falsifying origin to transport coal and pig iron into North Korea illegally.
The investigation confirmed that these three importers imported North Korean coal and pig iron which is worth 6.6 billion won in seven times between April and October last year. These importers re-exported the cargos to other ships in Russian ports, and then marked the country of origin to be Russia and shipped them to South Korea.
Two importers of the three importers used the same method to transport Korean coal into South Korea, remarked it as Lanco, which did not need to submit the origin, in order to avoid customs interception.
According to the survey, the international community has completely banned the import of coal from North Korea, causing the price of coal to plummet, and the involved companies have shipped cheaper coal to South Korea in order to obtain greater benefits.
In view of the Security Council’s decision to prohibit the import of coal into the country, that will cause a lot of diplomatic turmoil. Some people believe that it is impossible to rule out the possibility of the international community adopting a "sub-boycott" for South Korean companies. However, the South Korean government believes that on this issue, the South Korea and America have maintained close cooperation, the international community is less likely to adopt a secondary boycott.
It is reported that in October last year, two ships, “Sky Angel” and “Rich Glory”, respectively re-exported North Korean coal from the Russian port of Holmsk to Incheon Port and Puxiang port, with a total inflow of more than 9,000 tons. The Korea Customs Agency has been investigating whether Korean importers are aware of the coal originating in North Korea.
